A Bit About Me & How This All Started:

I am a Canadian, living in Belgium. “Why Belgium?” is the question I am asked all the time. Yes, Canada is crazy awesome, and about a million times bigger than Belgium – but I actually really enjoy life in Belgium, too!

As for how I got here…my boyfriend is Belgian, and I love to travel! So, when we were trying to figure out where to live, I opted for the more adventurous option of moving to live with him.

I’m all about slow travel. I don’t backpack, I don’t go out for months on end and I certainly don’t have a bucket list that includes every single country of the world. What I do have is a can-do attitude, a beautiful expat family and a knowledge that the world is an incredible place that I want to learn more about.

Basically, I’m an ordinary girl who got plunked into a life of adventure and new-ness, and really; I’m just winging it. My life, motherhood, my travels, living abroad, my eyeliner…everything. I have no idea what I’m doing, and when I do learn what I’m doing – I like to share it with you so you’re not as clueless as I was. 😉

My Timeline
(Otherwise Known As: How a Canadian ends up in
Belgium with a baby, 2 cats and a sexy Belgian man.)

2011:
I just happened to fall in love with a Belgian over the internet; which obviously changed my life. We spoke back and forth for about 7 months, and then he flew to Canada to meet me.

2011-2013:
Every 5 or 6 months, one of us would fly to visit the other, spending just a few weeks together at a time. Obviously this couldn’t go on forever…

2013:
So, after 2 years of long distance, I moved to Belgium and fell in love with the idea of (slowly but surely) seeing the world. I love part-time, slow travel, because I absolutely need my down-time at home with my Belgian.

Early 2014:
Ran out of money (because let’s be real, traveling and living abroad is expensive AF); and my visa was about to expire. We were told the visa we wanted (common law visa) would not be available to us because my Belgian was still a university student (not making an income). I moved back to Canada, and needless to say was devastated about going back to long distance.

Beginning of 2015:
Found out the information we got about becoming a common law couple (and getting a visa that way) was wrong – we could apply while my Belgian was still in university…so back to Belgium I went!

End of 2015:
Approved for my final/long term (Common Law) visa! I was now permanent resident of this awesome country and our long journey with visas was over!!

March 2016:
We’re pregnant! We decided to start a family; it was scary and exciting and about a million questions about having a baby abroad would need to be answered…

December 2016: We became a family of 3 when our son was born on Christmas Eve. We were now a multicultural, multilingual, international family!

A LITTLE MORE ABOUT ME…

MY FAVOURITE LOCATION(S) SO FAR:
Brugge, Belgium
Vancouver, BC, Canada

SOMETHING NOT A LOT OF PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT ME:
I am fairly terrified of birds, and that’s no joke. The phobia of birds is called Ornithiphobia and honestly, I have had panic attacks caused by being too close to a bird. It’s a weird and vivid fear.

MY FAVOURITE TRAVEL QUOTE:
“Travel makes one modest. You see what a tiny place you occupy in the world.”
– Gustave Flaubert

I like this quote because so often we get so stuck and caught up in our lives (the drama, the relationships, the jobs, the people) and we forget that there is an entire world with billions of people outside of us; and sometimes realizing/seeing that shifts our entire perspective in such a positive way.

DREAM DESTINATION:
Right now, I would probably say Greece or New Zealand. Or Iceland. Or Switzerland. Okay, everywhere, basically. But those ones would be the best.
