A Solo Travel Playlist for the Timid Traveler (to Bring Out Your Inner Badass)

Music is transformative and electric – and can change your mood in an instant. If you’re a timid or anxious traveler like myself, when you finally decide to explore solo, you need that extra bit of confidence to make you feel like you can conquer the world.

Aside from doing some anxiety-relief practices on the road, I’ve realized that music is a really great way to elevate your mood and get into the solo-travel zone. I went on my first solo mini-adventure back in February of 2016 when I had a 10+ hour layovers in Frankfurt and Vienna. This was the perfect way to dip my toes in the solo travel pool and as scary as it was – it was also really fun (thanks, in part, to my iPod).

I will be the first to say that long-term solo travel is not a fit for everyone, and I know that because it’s definitely not a fit for me. But being able to venture out into unknown territory by yourself (even if it’s just for a day) is really empowering and fun – and here are some songs that will pump you up!

Steppenwolf – Born to Be Wild

This upbeat, free-spirited song unleashes your fiercest personality; and gives you a huge confidence boost, which is perfect for exploring a new city (especially if you’re usually shy.)

Jet – Are You Gonna Be My Girl

This song has such a good beat, it’s impossible not to smile. Great for walking through new and interesting cobblestone streets of Europe.

Tom Cochrane – Life is a Highway (or any rockin’ cover of it)

This is just a must-have tune for a day on the road, especially when you’re alone. Crank it up, and don’t worry if you don’t know the words 😉

Dixie Chicks – Taking the Long Way ‘Round

Hands up if you’re one of the only ones out of all your friends from high-school who won’t be at the reunion because you’re living in Madrid or touring around Australia? This is your anthem, girl.

KT Tunstall – Big Black Horse and a Cherry Tree

This is the kind of song that, when you hear it, you automatically feel the bad-assery bubbling up inside you.

Lynard Skynard – Sweet Home Alabama

Maybe this one is a bit out there, but if you’re a country/small town gal like myself – this song is great for your day out! A bit of small town while you’re exploring the big city!

Ed Sheeran – Galway Girl

A little new music into the mix – this song is pumpin’ (especially if you’re anywhere in Ireland!) *cough – an excuse to visit Galway – cough*

Journey – Don’t Stop Believin’

This one doesn’t even need to be explained, because it’s epic and you will immediately feel it’s epic-ness brighten up your day.

Survivor – Eye of the Tiger

“Rising up, back on the street
Did my time, took my chances
Went the distance, now I’m back on my feet
Just a man and his will to survive”

(…I bet you just sang that.)

AC/DC – Back in Black

This song just has this way of making you feel invincible – even getting lost seems badass when you’re listening to some AC/DC.

Styx – Renegade

Okay if this song doesn’t pump you up, you have flat-lined. 😉

  1. I love this idea of music helping give you confidence when you travel solo! Familiar songs can give you comfort when you are in unfamiliar places. Hopefully once you’re boosted from these epic tunes you can take off the headphones and enjoy the sights and sounds of your new surroundings. I love that you included one of my favourites – Life Is A Highway!
